For us Indian-American girls, America is our mom. The best things about our mom: she lets us be smart and educated, she lets us be honest and authentic, she lets us speak our mind and get things out of our system, she lets us work, she lets us be independent and self-reliant, she makes it clear that girls are as human as men and therefore have to meet the same standards of valuing themselves, and being accountable to society and an asset to their mom, the USA. The land itself is our mom and the nation that developed is consistent with and an outgrowth of the spiritual energy of the land. The mountains of West Virginia feel, to locals, like a ‘maw-maw,’ or a caring and supportive grandmother.
